I. DESCRIPTIONS OF CAREER INTERESTS
The following pages contain the summary of your scores and interests on the CIP. The purpose of this feedback is to help you understand your areas of career interests and how to use the information in the career planning process. Interests can be combined with your report to determine career paths that are of high interest and will result in a long-term, enjoyable career. We encourage you to discuss your results with your Career Coach.
The CIP classifies your interests in 6 basic career areas:
1. Skilled Trades, Crafts and Technical Professions (S)
These careers involve practical and mechanical activities typically found in the skilled trades and technical areas. Individuals with high interest in this area are often practical, logical and factual.
2. Applied Technology (A)
The scientific careers involve analytical or intellectual activity often associated with the application of knowledge in problem solving or 'trouble shooting' situations. Individuals with high interest in this area are often analytical, systematic and efficient.
3. Enterprising (E)
These careers involve working with people in a management or leadership role in order to achieve an organizational objective. Individuals with high interest in this area are often persuasive, enterprising and extroverted.
4. Creative (C)
The creative careers involve intellectual activities in the arts, music, writing, performance and other unstructured environments. Individuals with high interest in this area are often artistic, creative and imaginative.
5. Personal Services (P)
The careers in the Personal Services cluster involve helping others in a supportive or nurturing manner and are often found in educational, counseling and social service settings. Individuals with high interest in this area are empathetic, patient, selfless and altruistic.
6. Business Services (B)
The careers in the Business Services cluster involve working with equipment and things in a relatively structured business environment often in a supportive role. Individuals with high interest in this area are loyal. dependable and trustworthy.
In addition to the 6 basic career areas, the CIP feedback also highlights your self-assessment into 3 sub-sections:
1) General Career Interests - This sub-section assesses interests associated with specific careers.
2) Skills and Abilities - This sub-section focuses on your interest in specific skills and abilities required.
3) Self Ratings - Rather than interests, this sub-section investigates your self-assessment of competency levels in several skill and ability areas.
It is quite possible that you will rate highly in 1 or 2 sub-sections and low in the third. For example, you might have high general interest in a specific career area and have developed several of the skills and abilities but you might not feel particularly competent. The ideal career path typically integrates all 3 sub-sections.
